Gladiola Faraday shared a speculation from the Weavers (the anti-war coalition helping magic users avoid prince Mordecai's conscription) that he might have been a paid instigator, though it's unclear who'd benefit...

The ship The Young Kraken and her pirates' code
The Young Kraken has a better reputation than most pirate vessels, and for good reason. Mainly because Captain Magpie is often merciful, teaching his crew the same attitude. Sometimes we even let go of a prize because we didn’t want to resort to violence towards people that didn’t really deserve it.
Captain Magpie's guiding principles encourages us to develop and follow the Young Kraken's Pirate Code.
