Our assessment

Friend or foe: Frei is convinced he's the driving force behind the incident that led to her exile. Since we're slowly befriending Frei, it stands to reason Marduk is our foe.

Associated quest:

  • prove Frei's innocence in order to undo her exile, thus implicating Marduk in the hellish attack on Kohshar
  • stop his further plans, if need be: we learnt that Saatia hired Simeon for an assassination in Kohshar. Since we don't like either Saatia or Simeon, we'll probably enjoy foiling that plan!

Notes: Koh'Shar, one of the bigger communities in the Sand Sea, was originally organised around an oasis. Their social structure is built around the merchant-kings (senior generation) and merchant-princes (junior generation). Each of these has a particular area of influence. During session 3, Frei was able to tell us about:

  • Nasser, the owner of the original oasis and the man who controls all water in Koh'Shar, making him the richest man in town, and perhaps also the most powerful
  • Jahari, who started the city guard and now organises security, making him Frei's ultimate boss when she was still a city guard

During session 4, we learnt about

  • Skourja, the princess of pleasures, who runs all the brothels and taverns in Koh'Shar
  • Sabor the cleric

Marduk is one of the lackeys vying for the merchant-kings' favour.

In the correspondence we found in Ghorann's hideout after his death during session 3, Marduk was looking to buy 2 hellhounds for purposes unknown. Ghorann refused. This appears to vindicate Frei as innocent of planning the attack: her exile seems to be part cover-up and part convenient racism.

In a PS, Marduk mentions a teleportation circle, like the one where Ghorann found us. This tracks with Enza's mention of such circles appearing semi-regularly in the bad lands and the Sand Sea of Breheima.

These letters appear old, predating the attack and Frei's exile... which in turn predates our waking up in Ghorann's cart by a large margin of time.
